On the Fence

-
Western Kansas
A wire fence stretches between twisted and leaning posts, a fence as old as the highway it parallels.
On one side of the fence, the greensward gully between pavement and crops. On the other, a beet farm, the border smeared with about a yard of weedy encroachment.
Two worlds joined in the wind under a swaying rusted wire.
One world, cultured and pristine, linear. One plant grown for the intended use of one species of animal.
The other world, wild and changing, chaotic. Thousands of species of plants, supporting thousands of species of insect, mammal, and reptile.
Which side do you think you would prefer to live on?
Me, I'll take the weeds.
